Cumberland Gap National Historical Park

KY-988
Middlesboro, KY 40965
(606) 248-2817

Description:

The gap of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is a break in the run of the Appalachian Mountain range that has, for centuries, provided an easy thoroughfare and safe haven for human travelers. The natural beauty of the park is always a draw: its 20,000 acres are replete with spectacular sights including waterfalls, unusual formations of rocks and scenic overlooks of the gap. Hike along some of the 70 miles of trails within the park or opt for a guided exploration of the Gap Cave. Another major feature of the park is the Hensley Settlement, occupied during the early 20th century and featuring shops that reflect a very different way of life than modern-day city living. The Wilderness Road Campground provides 160 campsites for overnight stays, and the town of Middlesborough, KY is just outside the boundaries of the park and provides many choices for hotel accommodations. Occupying land in three states: Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee, the park has many areas that are rarely visited due to their isolation and distance from major roads and trails.
